Also hello hey yes hi it is I your local firefox stan; here is your general reminder that if you're having massive issues with firefox along the lines of not being able to download, or all pages loading slow, there is likely something wonky that can be fixed.
Good troubleshooting steps to take in order:
(first create a FF account so that you can save everything like your bookmarks and preferences, etc)
- Restart your browser (you can go into settings and select 'open previous tabs and windows' before restart so that you don't lose all the pages you had open)
- Clear cache/cookies
- Try turning off all of your extensions and testing whatever was giving you issues; if that resolves the problem, enable your extensions one at a time until the issue repeats, and you have identified your problem; uninstall the extension and find a replacement or a workaround OR tweak the extension settings until the problem is resolved.
- Go into settings and set everything to default; if this fixes the issue, put your settings back the way they were until you duplicate the problem; you've now found your problem setting and can start figuring out ways around it.
- If that doesn't fix it, uninstall and reinstall firefox. Sometimes that's the problem.
- If that doesn't fix it, go to the firefox forums with the results of all of these tests and stats about your device and troubleshoot with them, but seriously something like 99% of problems can be fixed with a fresh install even if you're still running the same extensions.
To avoid problems with firefox please be mindful of the extensions you run! It is best to run extensions that are monitored by firefox, and running too many extensions can slow down your browser significantly, so don't load up with cool shit just because you can. Try to stick to stuff that you will actually use and don't duplicate if you don't have to (so unless you've got a really good reason, you probably don't need both privacy badger and ghostery, for example.)
If firefox is running pretty slow for you, you may want to consider either OneTab or Auto Tab Discard; both are tab managers that will minimize resource usage on FF. OneTab turns your tabs into kind of a bookmark list, Auto Tab Discard snoozes unused tabs based on settings you select (so it won't, for instance, snooze a tab with an unfilled form or media playing if you don't want it to). I personally prefer Auto Tab Discard, but either extension should help a lot if you're having general slowness issues with FF.
Also here's your reminder that as of now extensions are no longer supported on chrome, and that it's easy to migrate all your bookmarks from chrome to firefox. This is also your reminder that firefox mobile on android can be run with ublock origin, meaning that ad-free mobile browsing is available to you right this very second!
For the record:
- Firefox (beloved open source darling)
- Chrome (beloathed, tracking your every move)
- Safari (made by apple, NOT chromium, honorable mention because she is not chromium)
- Tor (yes it was developed by the US military, no that does not mean that it is run by the us military, yes many nodes are compromised, no that does not mean tor is useless, yes it is a really decent anonymizer, no that doesn't mean anything if you log into your bank account from it, yes it is wonderful, no you should NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES TORRENT ON TOR YOU'RE SLOWING IT DOWN FOR EVERYONE, yes it is wonderful, no it is not a daily driver browser, using tor as a daily driver is like using a sledghammer to open a carton of milk, you technically CAN but it's messy and wasteful)
- Edge (chromium in a microsoft hat)
- Brave (chromium in a cryptocurrency hat)
- Ecosia (this is a search engine, not a browser, and the mobile browser still tracks your data to serve you ads)
- Opera (chromium in a VPN hat)
